Q: What is the difference between named and numeric entities?

Named entities use a word like © for the copyright symbol. Numeric entities use the Unicode code point either in decimal (©) or hexadecimal (©). Named entities are more readable but only cover a subset of characters; numeric entities can represent any Unicode character.

Question 1

What are HTML entities?

Accepted Answer

HTML entities are sequences of characters that represent special characters in HTML. They start with an ampersand (&) and end with a semicolon (;). They can be named (e.g. & for &), decimal (e.g. &), or hexadecimal (e.g. &). Entities are used to display reserved characters like <, >, and & that would otherwise be interpreted as HTML markup.

Question 2

What is the difference between named and numeric entities?

Accepted Answer

Named entities use a word like © for the copyright symbol. Numeric entities use the Unicode code point either in decimal (©) or hexadecimal (©). Named entities are more readable but only cover a subset of characters; numeric entities can represent any Unicode character.

Question 3

Why should I encode HTML entities?

Accepted Answer

Encoding HTML entities prevents characters like <, >, and & from being interpreted as HTML markup, which is essential for displaying user-generated content safely and avoiding XSS vulnerabilities when inserting text into HTML pages.
